Michaelmas Cay

Michaelmas Cay sits on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef northeast of Cairns, a coral sand cay that also functions as a protected seabird sanctuary above the waterline. Diving and snorkelling here take place around the surrounding reef flats and coral bommies, with clear water typical of the outer reef and depths generally shallow enough to suit snorkellers as well as divers. It is rated a beginner site and is a popular day trip destination from Cairns and Port Douglas, often combined with reef pontoon operations, with green turtles and reef fish commonly reported around the cay. Conditions are generally mild, though as with much of the outer reef, wind and surface chop can affect visibility and comfort on any given day.
