About this site
Molnar Janos Cave is a flooded karst cave beneath Budapest, on the Buda side of the Danube near the thermal springs that feed the city's baths. It is one of the largest underwater cave systems explored in Europe, formed by thermal water dissolving the limestone over a long period, and the water entering the cave is warm as a result. Visibility can be very good near the entrance but the cave extends into a long, complex system with sections still being explored and mapped. The verified maximum depth reaches 60 metres in the deeper passages, and full penetration diving here is technical and demanding, restricted to trained cave divers with appropriate certification and equipment. Casual or recreational divers are generally limited to the cavern zone near the entrance.
