About this site
Mona Island sits in the Mona Passage between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, a strait known for open-ocean currents and deep water dropping off sharply around its limestone shoreline. The island itself is an uninhabited nature reserve, administered by Puerto Rico, noted above water for its cliffs and cave systems. Its surrounding waters are reached mainly by boat from Puerto Rico's west coast, a crossing of several hours across open passage. The diving here runs over a reef bottom, and divers have reported pufferfish, scorpionfish, and even dugong in these waters, though sightings of the latter would be unusual for the region.
