The MV Lake Illawarra was a bulk ore carrier that sank in January 1975 after striking a pylon of the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, Tasmania, bringing part of the bridge down and killing several crew members along with motorists on the roadway above. The wreck lies in the Derwent River near Hobart, submerged in deep, dark water with strong currents and very limited visibility, conditions that have made it a difficult and rarely dived site in practice. It is remembered mostly for the disaster itself and the damage to the bridge rather than as a typical recreational wreck dive.
