About this site
Popes Eye is a partially built circular rock wall in Port Phillip Bay, near the entrance known as the Rip, off Melbourne, Victoria. Originally begun in the 1880s as the foundation for a fort intended to defend the bay, it was never completed and now forms an artificial reef structure rising from the sandy seabed. It is a popular site for its colonies of Australian fur seals and its abundance of soft corals and sponges growing on the submerged wall, along with schooling fish that shelter within the horseshoe-shaped structure. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 8 metres and is rated a beginner dive, though it sits close to the tidal flow of the Rip so timing a dive around the tides matters. It is commonly reached by boat from Queenscliff or Sorrento.
