About this site

Port Gaverne is a dive in the inlet at Port Gaverne on the north Cornwall coast. It can be shore dived or boat dived, and it works well as a novice dive or a second dive of the day.

The site is on the east side of the inlet, around the small island at the end of The Main. Divers are usually put in at the entrance to the gully known as The Gut, between the headland and the island. The Gut is full of life but can have a strong surge if any swell is running.

Depth and tides. Maximum depth is around 14 m (46 ft), and it can be dived at any state of tide.

Exposure. It is reasonably sheltered from south-westerly winds, but exposed from west through to north-east.

Expect lobsters, edible crabs, spider crabs, velvet swimming crabs, tompot blennies, peacock worms, ballan wrasse, pollack and leopard gobies. Conger eels, dogfish, bass, mullet, sea bream and cuttlefish are often seen, along with hard and soft corals and sponges.
