About this site
Porth Castell (also known as McGees) is a shallow, sheltered bay on Anglesey, Wales, located at 53.271506, -4.621688, near Trearddur Bay. The bay sits to the left when facing the water, with a sandy beach floor and a maximum depth of around 5 m at high tide, making it one of the more forgiving sites on the island.
The terrain features a gully to the left of the bay that leads out into deeper water toward the cliffs at Ravenspoint, with rock outcrops and a low cliff headland continuing around toward Penrhos Bay. The bottom is sand, and kelp grows in clumps along the gully where it can hold on against the Irish Sea conditions.
Marine life in the gully includes small fish, crabs in crevices, and kelp fronds. The site is a shore dive with a gentle entry directly from the sandy beach. It is best dived approaching high tide, when depth is at its maximum. Visibility is generally good and often holds reasonable clarity when other nearby sites do not.

Parking is not available at the waterside; divers need to drop kit at the steps leading down to the beach, then drive up and around the corner to park. There is a slipway and hard standing for small boats adjacent to the site in Porth Diana, but the slipway cannot be used for launching private boats. The site's shallow depth, sheltered character, and easy beach entry make it well suited to beginners.
