About this site
Portus Julius lies in the Bay of Pozzuoli, part of the Campi Flegrei area on the coast west of Naples, submerged as a result of bradyseism that has gradually lowered this stretch of shoreline over centuries. The site was once a Roman naval harbor built in the first century BC to link Lake Lucrino and Lake Avernus to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Divers here explore submerged Roman structures, including remains of quays, villas, and mosaic floors, in the shallow waters off Baia and Pozzuoli.
