About this site
The Hackett was enrolled in Detroit in 1870 as the first bulk freighter built specifically for the iron ore trade, and she was also the first to operate with a barge consort. She caught fire in Green Bay on a trip from Cleveland to Marinette WI with coal. The fire started in the crew's quarters but spread to oil in the engine room. The vessel was grounded on Whaleback Shoal and the crew escaped in the lifeboats, later picked up by a fish tug. The vessel burned to the waterline, and later slipped off the reef slightly. Large sections of hull remain, along with the steeple engine, boiler, propeller and shaft, as well as coal cargo and misc. artifacts. Lies in about 16.8 m; sank 1905.
