Roi-Namur is the northernmost islet pair of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, a site of heavy fighting and Japanese and American air operations during World War II. The surrounding lagoon and reef flats around the former airfield hold aircraft wreckage from that period, reflecting the islet's history as a Japanese base overrun by US forces in early 1944. Divers exploring the wreck sites have reported humpback cowrie, peppered moray, smooth red-eyed crab, and snakehead cowrie among the marine life sheltering around the remains.
