About this site
The Sand Merchant is a shipwreck in Lake Erie off the Ohio shoreline, near Avon Point. She was a steel-hulled sand-sucking steamer that capsized and sank in a November storm in 1936 while carrying a load of sand, with loss of life among her crew. The wreck lies broken on the lake bottom and is dived out of the Lorain and Cleveland area boat operations that service Lake Erie's wreck sites. Depths on Lake Erie wrecks in this stretch tend to run to moderate range, and cold fresh water conditions along with limited visibility are typical of diving in this part of the lake.
