The SS Gulf America was an American oil tanker torpedoed by the German U-boat U-123 in April 1942, just off Jacksonville Beach, Florida, during the early months of U.S. involvement in World War II. The attack happened close enough to shore that residents reportedly watched the burning ship from the beach. The wreck lies in the Atlantic off the northeast Florida coast, and the coordinates given place it near the approach to Jacksonville.
