About this site
The SS Leopoldville lies off the French coast near Cherbourg, in the waters of the English Channel. The wreck reaches a maximum depth of around 44 metres. The Leopoldville was a Belgian troopship torpedoed by a German U-boat in December 1944 while carrying American soldiers across the Channel toward Cherbourg, resulting in heavy loss of life shortly before the end of the war in Europe. Its depth places it firmly in the range for experienced divers only.
