About this site
St Mary's Island sits just off the coast at Whitley Bay in Northumberland, north of Newcastle upon Tyne, connected to the mainland by a causeway that floods at high tide. The North Sea here meets a rocky shoreline near the island's small lighthouse, a landmark for the surrounding coast. The West Bay dive site off the island is a reef dive reaching a maximum depth of around 10 metres, rated beginner and suited to divers looking for a shallow, sheltered introduction to this stretch of the North Sea.
