About this site
The Sweepstakes is a wooden schooner that sank in 1885 near Big Tub Harbour at Tobermory, on the Bruce Peninsula in Georgian Bay, Lake Huron. Towed into the harbour after sustaining damage, it settled in shallow water and now rests largely intact at a maximum depth of around 3.7 metres, confirmed as a beginner dive. The cold fresh water of the lake has preserved much of the hull structure, and the wreck is often visible from the surface, making it a popular shallow dive and also a common snorkeling and glass-bottom boat attraction. Its shallow depth and calm harbour setting make it accessible to newer divers, and it is often paired with dives on the nearby Tobermory wrecks such as the City of Grand Rapids.
