About this site
The Pit is a cenote in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, part of the Sac Actun cave system near Tulum, known for its cathedral-like shaft and light beams that filter through the jungle canopy above the open surface pool down toward the cavern below. It reaches a maximum depth of around 121 metres and is rated an advanced dive. Divers have reported a halocline partway down the water column along with a hydrogen sulfide cloud and layer that give the site its distinctive haze at depth.
