Orchid Island (Lanyu) sits off the southeast coast of Taiwan in the Pacific, a volcanic island best known as home to the Tao indigenous people and as the site of a controversial nuclear waste storage facility built on its southern tip. The tide pools referenced here lie along the island's rocky shoreline near that facility. The coastline around Orchid Island is largely volcanic rock shaped by wave action, with pools forming in the intertidal zone.
