Umbria Wreck

The Umbria is a wreck off Wingate Reef near Port Sudan, on Sudan's Red Sea coast. It was an Italian cargo steamer scuttled by her own crew in 1940 to keep her munitions and supplies from falling into British hands after Italy entered the Second World War. The wreck lies largely intact on her side, still holding much of her original cargo, including cased bombs, wine bottles, and even a Fiat car, which makes her a well known penetration dive in the region. She sits in shallow enough water that parts of the hull break the surface, with much of the structure accessible in the upper tens of metres, and she draws divers from liveaboards working the Sudanese coast.
