Qiandao Lake, or Thousand Island Lake, is a large artificial reservoir in Zhejiang province, China, formed in 1959 when the Xin'an River was dammed for a hydroelectric project. The flooding submerged two ancient towns, Shi Cheng and He Cheng, along with their old streets, walls, and structures, which now rest underwater near the lake's Chun'an county area. These submerged towns are the basis for the underwater ruins dive sites in the lake, drawing interest for their archways, stonework, and carved features rather than for marine life, since it is a freshwater reservoir rather than an ocean site. Diving here reaches a maximum depth of around 35 metres and is rated an advanced dive.
