About this site
The USS Massachusetts (BB-2) lies in shallow water off Pensacola, Florida, near the mouth of Escambia Bay. Commissioned in the 1890s as an Indiana-class battleship, it was decommissioned and later used as a target ship, sinking in place in 1921 in shallow water where its superstructure remained visible for years afterward. The wreck sits in only about 25 to 30 feet of water, broken down and encrusted with marine growth after more than a century of exposure, and is often dived by boat from the Pensacola area. Its shallow depth makes it accessible to a range of divers, though the site is exposed and best done in calm conditions.
