About this site
The USS S-39 was a U.S. Navy S-class submarine that ran aground in 1942 near Rossel Island in the Louisiade Archipelago, off the eastern end of Papua New Guinea, after conducting a war patrol in the region. The crew was evacuated safely before the submarine was written off as a total loss. Its remains lie in the waters off this remote island group, far from the main dive hubs of the PNG mainland.
