Whales Head lies along the southern Oregon coast near Brookings, within the stretch of shoreline included in Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. This part of the Pacific coastline is defined by rocky headlands, sea stacks, and exposed swell coming off the open ocean. Divers exploring the site have reported aggregating anemones, giant green anemones, gumboot chitons, horned nudibranchs, ochre sea stars, Pacific purple sea urchins, and purple and striped shore crabs among the rocky substrate.
