Wondergat is a water-filled collapsed cavern in a dolomite sinkhole, about 60km from Lichtenburg and 30km from Mafikeng. The name is Afrikaans for wondrous hole. The opening is about 75 x 100m at the surface, and the sides are near vertical down to the bottom at about 36m. Maximum depth is about 58m.
Caverns extend north and south from the main shaft at the bottom, and their floors slope downward away from it. There is an overhang on the north side about half way down, and a narrow, quite shallow cave on the south wall known as Leopards cave.
Visibility is about 6m above 20m and about 15m below that, and more than 30m has been known in the cave. Winter often brings better visibility, because there are fewer divers kicking up silt and less rain runoff. Water temperature sits between 14 and 21°C.
Entry is from the shore, down newly built steps. The walk down fully kitted needs good balance, and the climb back after the dive can be strenuous. The site is not in a Marine Protected Area, and no permit is required.
