The Aikoku Maru is a large passenger-cargo ship wreck in Truk Lagoon. During Operation Hailstone it was hit by a torpedo that set off its ammunition stores in a massive explosion. The wreck lies at 130 to 200 feet (40 to 61 m), a deep and challenging dive.
Structure. The explosion destroyed much of the midsection and left a gaping hole, with wreckage strewn across the seafloor around it. The bow and stern are relatively intact, and the stern still has a large deck gun. A memorial plaque inside the wreck commemorates those who died in the explosion.
The wreck is now a reef with colourful corals, anemones and a variety of fish. Its depth means it is less disturbed.
