Baixa da Maia is a marine reserve on the east coast of Santa Maria, in front of Maia village. Smaller and bigger boulders rise here, and the site offers great possibilities for underwater photographers.
Big schools of barracuda and amberjack circle the boulders, hunting prey such as monkfish and small sardines. The northern part of the main rock is completely covered with yellow anemones. Groupers, huge crabs and lobsters, several kinds of moray eel and often stingrays can also be watched here.
