Billinghurst Cave is a large cave dive on the north coast of Gozo, Malta, between Reqqa Point and Cathedral Cave. It is also known as the Railway Tunnel and is considered the island's most proper cave dive.
Entry and exit are by a short ladder set into the cliffs above the cave. You float over about 25 to 30 m (82 to 98 ft) of clear water and then descend freely to the bottom, ready to swim through the huge entrance. The mouth is roughly 30 m (98 ft) wide and 20 m (66 ft) high, and the cave runs more than 100 m (330 ft) into the coast. The floor of the first section is flat and made of coarse sand, and the walls are covered in colourful sponges and false corals.
Further in, large boulders lead up to a shallower back section, where fixed cave lines lead to an air pocket at the farthest point before looping back to the entrance. Natural light fades completely inside, and it is an overhead environment, so it suits advanced divers. Water is often very clear, giving a fine view back to the entrance. The position on the north coast is exposed to weather.
Cracks and crevices hold crustaceans, shrimp and conger eels, with octopuses and fried egg jellyfish also seen. After leaving, you can explore the outer wall or do the safety stop under the ladder.
