Black Rock, or Pu'u Keka'a, is the prominent lava-rock formation at the northern end of the main Ka'anapali Beach resort area in West Maui. Its rocky habitat attracts reef fish and makes it one of Maui's best-known snorkeling locations, with depths to about 32 ft (9.7 m).
Triggerfish, goatfish, squirrelfish, sea turtles and rays are the typical sightings. The rock has deep cultural significance in Hawaiian tradition, and visitors should respect the land and ocean.
It is an exposed point, and water movement around the rock can differ a lot from the protected beach beside it. There are no lifeguards. Surge is common along the wall, strong tidal swings can set up head currents, and rocks can cause damage if you are pushed against them.
