Emerald Bay is a reef dive site located at Laguna Beach, California, situated within a Marine Protected Area where no-take rules are strictly enforced — nothing may be removed from the water.
The reef runs from the surface down to a maximum depth of 45 feet (13.7 m), offering a range of depths suitable for different experience levels. Bottom type is reef, with structure worth exploring closely for small critters hiding among it.
The site holds Sheephead, Garibaldi, Señoritas, Bat Rays, Sand Bass, and Sculpin among its resident marine life.
Access is the primary challenge here: the beach entry points are controlled by private gated communities, so getting in requires either knowing a resident or arriving by boat. Visibility ranges from 5 to 25-plus feet (roughly 1.5 to 8 m), and water temperature spans 52–78 °F (11–26 °C). Heavy boat traffic is a significant hazard, so divers should exercise caution throughout the dive and especially at the surface. There is no lifeguard stand at this location. Carrying a Surface Marker Buoy, a knife, and an underwater light is strongly recommended.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
