Half Mile Reef is a coral reef site located to the east of French Cay, an uninhabited cay roughly 20 miles south of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos. As the name suggests, the reef runs approximately half a mile in length, and sits along a wall system with a maximum depth of around 26 metres (85 feet).
The reef features a notable large bowl formation along the wall that tends to buffer the current effects experienced elsewhere on the reef. Two large elephant ear sponges, each measuring roughly 2–2.5 metres (7–8 feet) across, sit twenty feet apart along the 26-metre (85 fsw) depth contour and serve as reliable landmarks on the dive.
Large schools of barracuda and mahogany snappers are consistently present at the site. Grey reef sharks and nurse sharks are also encountered here, with occasional eagle rays reported in the area around French Cay.
Half Mile Reef is rated as an intermediate-level dive. It is reached by boat as part of a full-day trip from most departure points, given French Cay's remote location. Visibility at the site is generally great, and current, while a factor on other parts of the reef, is reduced within the bowl section.
