The Hilma Hooker is Bonaire's most famous wreck, located between the dive sites The Lake and Angel City. The vessel was a former cargo ship that was seized for smuggling and later deliberately sunk; it now rests on its side on the seafloor.
The wreck sits between 18 and 30 metres (60–100 feet) deep, with the shallowest point at around 18 metres and the maximum depth reaching approximately 29.9 metres (98 feet). Divers can swim alongside the full length of the hull and take in the wreck from multiple angles, including perspectives that change significantly with depth.
Over time the Hilma Hooker has transformed into an artificial reef. Large schools of tarpon and horse-eye jacks are regularly seen around the wreck, along with angelfish.
The site is an advanced dive, and Advanced Diver certification is required to explore the wreck at its full depth. Open Water Divers are limited to shallower observation and cannot access the deeper sections of the hull. The site is reached as a shore dive on Bonaire.
