About this site
Igloo is a sloping reef off Diani in Kenya, a short boat ride from central Diani and reached by a deep mooring. A coral plateau gives way to a sandy base, with the reef top at about 10 to 12 metres and a maximum depth of 25 metres.
The remains of a former underwater observatory rest on the sand at approximately 20 metres. Rounded coral bommies across the reef form sheltered gaps and swim-throughs.
Turtles regularly pass across the reef or cruise along the sandy edge. Yellow snapper, fusiliers and trevally gather around the bommies, and moray eels, mantis shrimp, cuttlefish and pufferfish turn up among the coral. Smaller finds include ghost pipefish, leaf fish, nudibranchs and ribbon eels.
