Kalais

The Kalais is the wreck of a hundred-metre cargo vessel lying just outside Las Palmas. It was scuttled in the 1980s after the owners refused to pay mooring fees, and it sits upright on the seabed just outside the harbour works in an excellent state of preservation, with artefacts and equipment still aboard.

A king post can be followed from 14 metres down to the deck at 27 metres. You can enter the hold, which still contains much of its cargo of cement bags, and at the stern the walkways make a swim-through where the bath and the cooker can be found. Since the harbour extension in 2014 the wreck can no longer be dived.

Very large schools of barracuda and damselfish swim around the king post. Glasseyes, lobsters, morays, wrasse, parrotfish and bream are also found here, and angel sharks have been seen prowling on the sand nearby.
