Malabea East is a reef dive site characterised by a steep wall dropping to 55 metres, with a topography of large overhangs, canyons, crevasses, and corners. The walls are covered with soft corals, sea fans, and sponges, and the site holds large gorgonians throughout its long, healthy reef section. The changing relief — steep walls giving way to slopes and corners — makes it well suited to macro photography.
Under the overhangs, divers find soft coral crabs, dottybacks, gobies, schooling convict blennies, and catfish. Out in open water, turtles are regularly seen, along with larger schools of sergeant major damselfish, butterflyfish, and red toothed triggerfish. Wobbegong sharks, reef sharks, and eagle rays are also recorded at the site.
The site is rated for intermediate to technical divers, with a depth range from the surface to 55 metres. Current is medium, visibility is great, and water temperature sits between 27 and 30 °C. The best season to dive Malabea East runs from March to June.
