Mosquito Pier, also known as Rompeolas, is an abandoned military pier on the northern coast of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Originally built in the early 1940s as part of a plan to connect Vieques with the main island of Puerto Rico, construction was halted during World War II. The pier stretches nearly a mile into the sea, and its massive pillars descend to the ocean floor, where they have evolved into a thriving marine habitat.
The site functions as an offshore dive without requiring a boat — divers and their gear are typically driven out to the end of the pier by pick-up truck, making entry and logistics straightforward. Diving takes place around the large support pillars at the seaward end of the structure.
The protected environment around the pillars supports schools of tropical fish, moray eels, rays, sea turtles, and nurse sharks. The site is considered accessible to divers of all experience levels, from beginners to seasoned divers.
