The Red Pillar is a shallow reef just off Peel Island, about 1 km north of Havelock in the Andaman Islands. It is a beginner site, with depths of 5 to 12 m (16 to 40 ft) and manageable currents.
Reef and features. The reef has vibrant coral and a community of reef fish, and the most striking residents are huge barrel sponges. A sunken scooter and bicycle lie on the bottom, and fish cruise past them.
Sightings include reef fish, snappers, fusiliers, stingrays, crocodilefish and scorpionfish, alongside the barrel sponges.
It is dived by boat. Swimming skill is not a prerequisite for the introductory dives run here, and it suits new divers as well as anyone interested in unusual underwater scenery.
