Salon

Salon is a coral reef site off Tofo, reached by a short boat ride of about 2 km, around 5 minutes. Depth runs from about 12 to 18 m. It is rated for Open Water divers and suits training dives, refresher dives and long, relaxed dives for experienced divers. It is also used as a night dive site.

Terrain is a coral outcrop that climbs about 6 m up from the sandy bottom, described elsewhere as a long ridge with boulders scattered around, overhangs and small caves.

Marine life centres on rays and cleaner shrimp, which give the site its name. Mask rays shoot out from the sand under unsuspecting divers, and electric torpedo rays hide in the small caves. Blue spotted rays and ribbontail rays also hover over the sand and among the boulders. A resident green turtle may be found asleep, and almost a dozen species of crustacean live here, including peacock mantis, cleaner and banded boxer shrimp. Octopus are common, and reef squid are sometimes seen. Honeycomb, black cheek and geometric morays, firefish and paperfish use the overhangs and caves, and trumpetfish swim past at mask height.
