Spooky Channel is a reef dive site around Roatan, formed by an ancient river gorge cutting through the island. The dive begins in a lagoon before opening into a cathedral-like bowl, with channel walls rising from around 27 m (90 ft) almost to the surface. The underwater crevasse and dim light give the site its character, with shafts of light penetrating from above; visibility can be lower here, which is considered part of the experience.
The channel reaches a maximum depth of 27 m (90 ft), and the overhead-style environment becomes pronounced around the 18 m (60 ft) mark. The terrain combines the main channel passage with an outer wall, and the structure creates inner currents as well as an out current that can push divers toward open water.
Moving toward the outer wall, divers can expect to encounter sea stars, southern sennets, toadfish, lobster, snapper, grouper, and barracuda near the mooring. Lobsters, octopuses, groupers, shrimps, rays, and parrotfish are also associated with the site.
This is an experienced diver site. Good air consumption, calm buoyancy, and comfort in overhead-style environments are required. Strong current, dim light, the underwater crevasse, and the risk of being driven out to sea by the out current make it unsuitable for novice divers.
