The Canyon is a dive site at Pulau Weh characterised entirely by its dramatic topography: divers descend a deep wall, pass through an underwater canyon lined with hundreds of gorgonian fan corals, and finish by swimming under a natural arch. The site is rated advanced to difficult.
The wall drops to a maximum depth of 40 m, with the terrain defined by pinnacles, giant sea fans, and the canyon passage itself. Visibility is consistently great, making the full scale of the formations easy to appreciate.
Marine life along the wall and canyon includes schooling bannerfish, unicorn fish, gold saddle goatfish, barracudas, trevally, snappers, emperors, octopus, and nudibranchs. Devil eagle rays, manta rays, turtles, and large Napoleon wrasse are possible sightings. Mola mola sunfish have been recorded on an annual basis when the water turns cold. Water temperature is typically 28–29°C.
The dive ends on a boulder shoreline, where tangs and surgeonfish are present. Current is a regular feature of the site, and combined with the depth and technical topography, The Canyon is suited to experienced divers comfortable with strong flow and deep walls.
