The Pit is a deep open cenote located in the Riviera Maya near Playa del Carmen, Mexico, classified as a cave dive site reaching a maximum depth of 40 m (130 ft). It is an open-sky cenote, meaning natural light enters from above, but divers encounter low-light sections as depth increases through the overhead environment.
The cave interior presents several distinct conditions layered by depth: haloclines mark the transition between fresh and salt water, and a hydrogen sulfide gas layer forms a visible cloud within the water column, creating a dramatic visual effect while also posing a genuine hazard. Narcosis is a risk at depth in this overhead environment, and low-light settings require a dive light.
Conditions at The Pit are protected with no current, visibility is excellent, and water temperature holds steady between 24–26°C year-round. Bat colonies roost at the cenote, visible at the surface opening.
The Pit is an Advanced Open Water certification minimum, and it is firmly in the advanced category due to the combination of depth, overhead environment, haloclines, the hydrogen sulfide cloud, and narcosis risk. It is frequently paired with a subsequent dive at Dos Ojos on the same day.
