The Tunnel is a dive site at Layang Layang, a hard coral lover's reef with dense, colourful staghorn, plate, table, mushroom and brain corals. It is a beautiful night dive as well as a daytime one.
Anthias and many other reef fish cover the coral, and moray eels lie in the cubby holes and gullies of the formations. At 10 metres the coral slope gives way to a vertical drop-off, home to soft corals and sponges of many colours.
Amberjacks swim here in a large barrel-shaped school, and a diver who drifts slowly into it is accepted as one of them. The water below is some 2,000 metres deep, so larger and unusual animals can appear in the blink of an eye. Turtles, sweetlips, barracuda and reef sharks have also been reported.
