Cala Cupa is a rocky cove on Giglio island, reached from Giglio Porto heading north, just off the Lazzaretto promontory and before Cala dell'Arenella. It is one of the most popular coves for divers, fishermen and boats of every kind.
The corals are the draw, especially the gorgonians that cover the cove walls in tall fans up to a metre high. The oldest is a Gerardia, the false black coral, more than 25 years old, in vivid yellow, which on its own is worth the dive. The species has declined across Italian seas through fishing, pollution and careless diving.
The dive is rated advanced, with a maximum depth of about 36 metres.
