The Canyon is a reef dive site near Dahab, on Egypt's Red Sea coast, located approximately 1.5 kilometres south of the Blue Hole. Access is from shore across a shingle beach, from which divers cross a reef platform to reach a sandy lagoon before entering the sea via a saddle on the lagoon's western point. It is best to begin the dive at high tide to avoid damaging the reef.
The sandy lagoon sits at an average depth of around 3 metres and leads into a coral garden before the canyon itself. Descending into the canyon brings divers to a sandy bottom at approximately 28 metres, while the canyon drops further behind to 54 metres. Heading north from the main drop, a cave opens at roughly 17 to 18 metres depth. Air bubbles rising from the seabed throughout the canyon create a distinctive, effervescent effect as you descend.
Marine life at the Canyon spans several zones. The shallow lagoon holds Goatfish, Butterflyfish, Dominos and Pullers. A dense school of Glassfish occupies the cave at 17 to 18 metres, where sunlight filtering through the fish creates a notable visual effect. A colourful coral garden, passed on the way out and viewed properly on the return, adds further interest to the dive.
The site carries a technical difficulty rating with a maximum depth of 25 metres for the main dive. Given the depth of the canyon and the cave penetration involved, the site suits experienced divers with appropriate certification for the conditions encountered.
