Cod Hole is a swim-through dive site located at the end of the island on the Ribbon Reefs, and is consistently rated among the top ten dives in Australia. Entry to the swim-through is at around 15 metres, passing through to approximately 18 metres depth, with a sandy bottom behind the site beginning at 20 metres. The site is associated with Lizard Island and is accessible as part of liveaboard itineraries in the Far North Queensland region.
Inside the Cod Hole, divers regularly encounter large cods, Wobbegong Sharks, Moray Eels, Cuttlefish, Crayfish, Cleaner Shrimps, Slipper Crabs, and Lionfish. The surrounding area holds large schools of Jewfish, Kingfish, Sweetlips, and Trevally. The sandy bottom behind the site is one of the better spots for large pelagics, and the area attracts Eagle Rays, Bullrays, and giant Queensland Gropers throughout the year. Manta Rays are a good chance in summer, while Grey Nurse Sharks gather in the sand trenches during the colder months of June through November. The site is also known for its resident giant potato cod.
The site is suited to Advanced Open Water divers certified to 30 metres, as it forms part of an open-ocean reef system where depth ranges and conditions can vary significantly.
