Cod Hole is a world-famous reef dive site located on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, in the Ribbon Reefs region of Queensland. It is internationally recognised for the giant potato cod that inhabit the site and have become thoroughly accustomed to divers over many years, making close encounters a defining feature of the dive.
The site is accessible only by liveaboard vessel, as it lies in a remote stretch of the outer Great Barrier Reef well beyond the range of day trips. Visibility at Cod Hole is exceptional, consistent with the clear waters characteristic of this part of the reef.
The marine life at Cod Hole centres on the giant potato cod, large diver-sized fish that approach divers with notable confidence. Reef sharks, rays, and colourful tropical fish are also present at the site.
Cod Hole is suited to certified divers, and the site carries an advanced difficulty rating, reflecting both its remote location and the nature of the diving environment.
