Dalkey Sound is a drift-dive site in the channel between Dalkey Island and the Irish mainland, diveable when tidal conditions prevent diving at nearby exposed sites. The bottom runs from around 10 to 20 metres and is mostly sand, with occasional rocky outcrops scattered across it.
The tide can run hard through the Sound, making this the preferred choice when diving off slack water is not possible and turning it into an exciting drift dive. Slack water is essential for a controlled dive; at mid-tidal range the current can reach up to 4 knots. A southeasterly swell can make landing difficult, and sea angling lines on the bottom are a hazard to watch for.
Marine life on the sandy bottom includes crabs, dogfish, and brittlestars, with the brittlestars particularly abundant in summer when they can carpet the bottom in large numbers.
The site is graded for Ocean Diver level, though the strong currents call for intermediate experience and careful tide planning. Diving is best timed off slack or at mid-tidal range, with slack water considered essential for safe entry and exit.
