Eel Garden is a wall dive at the western corner of Menjangan Island, off north-west Bali, Indonesia. It is reached by boat and is often called the must-dive of the island. It is a three-part dive, with a wall, a sandy slope and a shallow coral garden.
Wall: the dive begins on a straight wall that starts at about 10 m and drops to 50 m. A cloud of damselfish sits along the top, with blue soft sponges that often host giant frogfish. Gorgonian sea fans are numerous, and pygmy seahorses can be found by close searching.
Sand and garden: the wall ends on a sandy slope whose top, at about 18 m, forms a plateau covered in masked garden eels, which gave the site its name. Beyond it is a shallow coral garden at around 10 m, where you spend the rest of the dive among coral heads looking for turtles, leaf scorpionfish, nudibranchs and octopus.
The site sits in a small channel between Menjangan and Bali and sees mild current at times, from none to medium. Where there is flow, reef sharks, dogtooth tuna, giant barracuda and giant trevally hunt in schools of snapper and sweetlips. On a good day, with the right current and visibility, the dive is rated alongside Raja Ampat.
