Elephant Head is a pile of huge granite boulders in open sea south-west of Island 8 in the Similan Islands, Thailand. It towers up from over 40 metres to the surface. It is named for the series of boulders that break the surface and look like an elephant's head from a certain angle.
The boulders are piled to form swim-throughs, channels, canyons and gorges, and there is easy shelter behind them from the current. Colourful ribbon eels live on the sandy patches between the boulders and schools of giant trevally cruise over and between them. A large resident great barracuda often hovers over the shallower part, and around the deeper ends you may spot whitetip, blacktip and grey reef sharks. Visibility is 20 to 40 metres or more.
The currents are often very strong. On some days the flow hits the boulders and bounces around, creating up currents, down currents and at times whirlpools. Follow the guide closely. The site is for experienced divers only.
