Fantasy Reef is a series of reefs in 40 to 50 ft (12 to 15 m) of water off Oahu, Hawaii, reached by a boat ride of about 25 minutes. It is regarded as one of the better reef dives on the island, and as one of the more demanding and least consistent.
The site is made up of three plateaus of ancient volcanic rock, now covered in reef and coral. Caves, overhangs and swim-throughs run through each plateau. It sees far less traffic than the popular spots, and the reef is pristine.
Common sightings include reef sharks, turtles, eels and octopus, and monk seals have been known to rest here. Turtles use the overhangs to hide from the tiger and Galapagos sharks in the area.
Visibility ranges from 60 to 120 ft (20 to 40 m). It is done as a drift dive, and it also makes a good night dive when conditions allow. The site lies well offshore and is often too rough, so groups sometimes turn around and dive elsewhere. On calm days it can be among the most beautiful dives in the Hawaiian islands.
