Il Grottone is a large underwater cavity that opens at the base of the limestone cliff on the south-east side of Tavolara island, Sardinia. The cave formed naturally within the majestic limestone escarpment and its entrance and outer walls are coated in green sciaphilous algae and encrusting red algae.
Inside the cave, where natural light does not penetrate, every surface is densely covered by sponges, bryozoans and coelenterates, producing a rich variety of colours that a torch is needed to appreciate fully. A good buoyancy technique and a dive light are essential for exploring the interior safely.
