Lovango Cay Reef is a boat-access reef site located between St. John and St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, known locally as a moderate-difficulty dive suited to intermediate divers. The reef is characterized by a dropping shelf structure with big brain coral and purple sea fans, with the outer edge falling quickly to 40 feet (12 metres) or beyond.
Schools of blue tang move along the reef shelf, and the site is visited via mooring balls — charter captains use established moorings rather than anchoring on the coral. The best conditions are on an incoming tide, and divers should watch depth carefully on the outer edge where the bottom drops off sharply.
Entry and exit are by boat only, with mooring balls in place for vessels. Divers should monitor for boat traffic when surfacing, and the site pairs naturally with a nearby stop for a half-day charter itinerary.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
